A Welcome from the President
Welcome to the GSSM Community from Dr. Murray Brockman, president of the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics
Since becoming president of the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics in 2001, I have often told people I have the best job in South Carolina. Here, I work every day with some of the most intelligent and inquisitive young people in the state. This is a unique community of scholars, where exploration, discovery and personal growth are everyday events. Here, surrounded by their peers and led by a remarkable faculty and staff, talented students develop to their full potential.
Whether coming to GSSM to live, or joining one of our many outreach programs, you will find the same commitment to excellence, and the same seriousness of purpose, with the same sense of fun and delight in learning. Here, people learn biology in the field, chemistry in the lab, and computer science by programming. We have shown again and again that there's no limit to what young people can accomplish in this environment.
Deciding to come to GSSM for the junior and senior years is one of the best and most momentous decisions a student and his or her parents can make. From long experience, we know that sometimes talented high school students have already chosen the career they want to pursue, and we can support them as they delve deeply into their chosen fields of study. But more often, students want to explore the dimensions of their talent before deciding their life's direction. Not only the intellect, but also the student's character and spirit play a role.
Explore these Web pages, looking at athletics, activities, clubs, and opportunities for leadership, fun and service in addition to the kinds of coursework in science, math and the humanities you have only wished for up to now. Look also at opportunities in the surrounding community for worship and other aspects of life at home.
We hope you will come and visit. Talk to students here and learn why, when asked the best part of GSSM, they talk about making "friends for life."
