Chemistry Instructor

GSSM is growing and requires outstanding faculty in many disciplines to start by August 2012. As part of our expansion, we are seeking an exceptional chemistry instructor. Applicants should have a Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, and a love of teaching. Desired qualifications include a strong content background in chemistry and experience in teaching chemistry at advanced high school or college levels, knowledge and application of technology, an understanding of gifted learners, and enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high-school-aged students.

The candidate selected must be able to teach college-level introductory courses and develop an elective course(s) in chemistry complementary to the Organic Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry already taught. In addition to teaching gifted and talented students in a small class setting, the successful candidate must be innovative, willing to guide and tutor students, and adhere to an office hour schedule. A willingness to conduct research and mentor students in chemistry project areas is a positive. Academic advising, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.

Physics Instructor

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of effective teaching at either the undergraduate or advanced high school level. We seek candidates who show enthusiasm for and innovation in teaching with a minimum of one year of full-time teaching experience.

The candidate selected must be able to teach college-level physics courses and labs and to develop successful elective courses. Qualifications include a strong content background in physics, knowledge and application of technology, an understanding of gifted learners, and enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high-school-aged students. The successful candidate must be innovative and willing to guide and mentor students. A willingness to conduct research and mentor students in physics project areas is a positive.

Vice President for Academic Affairs

Nationally recognized for its academic excellence, GSSM invites applications for this senior leadership position. The VP for Academic Affairs works with students, faculty and administrators to provide an advanced and innovative curriculum that challenges and prepares some of the State’s best minds to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Generally speaking, the new Vice President for Academic Affairs will be responsible for sustaining and renewing the excellent climate for academic achievement at GSSM as we grow. Facilities and funding are in place to support more than doubling the current size of the faculty and student body. This Vice President will be responsible for faculty recruitment, evaluation and development, along with coordination of curriculum development and assessment. He or she will also carry a substantial leadership role with students, as they undertake a substantial new academic challenge in a residential setting.

An advanced degree is required, with a Ph.D. in science, mathematics or engineering preferred. Prior teaching and administrative experience at the college or high school level is also required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to effectively lead accomplished senior faculty, 80% of whom have Ph.D.s, as well to mentor new teachers. Demonstrated insight into the development of mastery of science and mathematics by gifted young people will weigh heavily as well.

This position is full-time (12 months) with State benefits, and the salary is highly competitive based on qualifications and experience. The position start date is flexible, from now through the beginning of the next school year.

Biology Instructors

As part of GSSM's expansion, we are seeking two exceptional Biology instructors. Applicants should have a Master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, and a love of teaching. While demonstrated teaching excellence and intellectual leadership are more important than specialization, ideally, one instructor should specialize in Vertebrate Biology, and one should focus on Molecular Plant Biology. A public school teaching certificate is not required.

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of effective teaching at either the undergraduate or advanced high school level. We seek candidates who show enthusiasm for and innovation in teaching with a minimum of one year of full-time teaching experience.

Current university-level courses taught at GSSM include Principles of Biology, Vertebrate Biology, Ornithology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience and Human Anatomy and Physiology, along with independent studies. GSSM encourages the introduction of new courses. Courses offered will vary each semester depending on the interests and expertise of instructors and on student interest. GSSM offers a unique opportunity to teach these subjects during weekly labs of about three hours, held in the field when appropriate. Further qualifications should include a knowledge and application of technology in the classroom, enthusiasm for teaching intelligent/motivated high school students, and an ability to advise students in the completion of senior research projects.

History Instructor

As part of GSSM's expansion, an exceptional History instructor is sought. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in History with an earned doctorate preferred and a love of teaching. A public teaching certificate is not required.

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of effective teaching at either the undergraduate or advanced high school level. A minimum of one year of full-time teaching experience is sought, along with enthusiasm and innovation.

The position will initially be responsible for teaching advanced American History. Additional electives will be based on individual interest and expertise.

English Instructor

Mathematics Instructors

GSSM invites applications for two full-time faculty positions in mathematics to begin in either January or August 2012. This extended hiring window allows both for those immediately available and others currently under contract.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or math education. An earned doctorate is preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of effective teaching at either the undergraduate or advanced high school level. A minimum of one year of full-time teaching experience is sought along with enthusiasm and innovation. The anticipated teaching load is four courses per semester. The mathematics curriculum at GSSM includes Pre-calculus, Calculus I and II, Statistics, Multivariate Calculus, Discrete Structures, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

Computer Science Instructor

GSSM seeks an exceptional Computer Science Instructor beginning no later than August 2012.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the Computer Science and Information Systems disciplines. This includes programming fundamentals, object-oriented programming, data structures and elective courses in topics depending on the candidate’s interest such as parallel programming, computer architecture, operating systems, artificial intelligence and web development. Faculty are expected to actively participate in curriculum development, development and assessment of learning outcomes. Collegiality is a hallmark at GSSM - essential for ongoing development of departmental missions and objectives.

The faculty will fulfill the professional responsibilities of remaining current with industry and discipline advancement, revising program and course curricula to maintain relevance, and teaching scheduled classes and maintaining scheduled office hours. The anticipated teaching load is four courses per semester.

A Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field is required. An earned doctorate is preferred.

Director of Guidance Programs/College Counselor

As a school recognized for academic excellence where 100% of our students attend college, GSSM invites applications for a professional who will work with students, parents, faculty, and college admissions offices to support and assist students in optimizing the college choices.

The Director of Guidance Programs will steward students (and their parents) through the college admissions process and develop programs that support the college and career needs of students. These programs will focus on community and parent outreach and developing workshops and educational materials to address the needs of our growing and diverse population.

Candidates are sought with experience working with high school students in an advanced academic environment (high school and/or college) and effective use of the Naviance system. A master’s degree in educational guidance and counseling or other related field with at least two years in a high school or counseling setting is required. Consideration may also be given to candidates holding a bachelor’s degree in education or communications with least three years of college admissions or related experience.

This is a full-time State of S.C. position with full benefits and a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position start date is flexible from now through the beginning of next school year.
