Smart knows no boundaries. That’s why it’s no surprise that GSSM students and alumni are taking the critical-thinking skills they’ve honed in the small Pee Dee community of Hartsville and applying them to real-life situations and hands-on scientific research opportunities in far off locales ranging from Africa to Russia. Kelly Brock GSSM‘05
About Kelly: A rising junior concentrating in Engineering Sciences at Harvard, she’s spending 10 weeks in Yokohama, Japan as an intern at the RIKEN Center for Allergy and Immunology. Kelly is working in a lab focusing on single cell analysis, using wet-lab techniques and fluorescent microscopes.

Lily Elsner GSSM ’10
About Lily: A rising senior at GSSM, Lily is one of three students chosen to participate in GSSM’s new Research Exchange Scholars Program (RESP): A Roche International Science Education Initiative. Lily is spending seven weeks living with a local host family and conducting college-level research in areas including applied microbiology, botany and cyto- and neurophysiology.
