GSSM's Summer Science Program Kicks Off

June 21, 2010

This summer, nearly 300 rising eighth, ninth and 10th graders from across South Carolina - and even some from as far away as England and Aruba - will head to Hartsville for a camp experience full of challenging projects, exciting field trips and hands-on lab activities.

The Summer Science Program (SSP), an enriching experience designed for middle and high schoolers interested in science, math and technology, runs June 20-26 and June 27- July 3.

Students attend one of two, one-week learning sessions, in which they live on the GSSM campus and attend full-day classes. They choose from a variety of stimulating courses including popular camp choices such as Robotics, CSI-GSSM, Field Ecology of the Southern Appalachians, Marine Biology and A Mathematical Tour of Forensic Science. Students are taught by professors from colleges and universities throughout South Carolina, as well as instructors from GSSM.

"Very few rising eighth, ninth, or 10th graders have ever had an opportunity to learn about herbal medicine, or ethnobotany, with a teacher as knowledgeable in the field as Dr. Florence Anoruo of Claflin University, or to learn about mathematical forensic science with an internationally recognized authority such as Keith McElveen," said Dr. Clyde Smith, SSP director and GSSM physics instructor.

"SSP provides those opportunities, and many others just as exciting."

There still are slots available for rising ninth graders in the courses Ethnomedicine: Herbal Medicine and Marine Biology during the week of June 27- July 3. Call (843) 383-3958 to learn more about SSP or to register for an available camp session.

The GSSM Foundation would like to thank the following organizations for their generous support of SSP: The Beaufort Fund; The F. James and Sheila Hodges Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina; Myrtle Beach Chicora Rotary; Dr. and Mrs. Peter O'Kelly; Plum Creek Foundation; Rotary Club of Five Points; Vulcan Materials Company Foundation.
