GSSM Student Artwork Selected for Local Art Exhibits
February 17, 2010
Seventeen students at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) have been invited to display their artwork in three area exhibits during February, March and April.
The students crafted their unique creations during Art in the Interim, a two-week mini course taught in January by professional artist and award-winning South Carolina sculptor, Patz Fowle. During the course, which is sponsored by Columbia-based commercial real estate owner and development firm Edens and Avant, students used terra cotta clay, leather, canvas and other materials to express their creativity.
"The most memorable moments were when students who had previously told me that they disliked painting said that it is now their favorite thing to do," Fowle said. "I teach them in a way that each student will be successful. I saw firsthand the magical effects of (art) on the students' well-being and happiness."
A public exhibition of GSSM students' artwork is being hosted at the Hartsville Memorial Public Library through the month of February. In March, 10 of the Art in the Interim pieces will be part of the South Carolina Art Education Association Regional Youth Art Month Exhibition at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library in Florence.
In April, students' 3-D mixed media pieces made of old toys, recycled plastics and metal wire will be on display in the "Green" Exhibition, at the Black Creek Arts Council Gallery in Hartsville.
Participating students include: Alexis Bertram of Piedmont; Nathanael Biester of Chesterfield; Colleen Cohn of Laurens; Emmie Daly of Aiken; Paula Dey of Florence; Sande Eier of Ladsen; Esmeralda Flores Marcial of Newberry; Katerina Lay of Hartsville; Sarah Monroe of Anderson; Charlotte Musser of Columbia; Kelly Nguyen of North Charleston; Mary E. O'Kelly of Florence; Philip Park of Greenville; Anna Rollings of Bethune; and Morgan Young of Chapin.
Art in the Interim is part of GSSM's January Interim program, a break from routine designed to expose and inspire students with unique and enlightening educational experiences. For three fun-filled weeks in January, GSSM students are treated to a variety of educational offerings different from their normal courses of study.
Courses run the gamut from science and technology to art, music and drama. Popular choices besides Art in the Interim include "Game Development," "Introduction to Filmmaking," and "Scuba Diving." Several courses usually include travel and field experiences with at least one overseas opportunity. Interim courses are taught by members of the GSSM Faculty along with visiting professors from South Carolina colleges and universities.
