The students, Brian Mugo of Columbia, son of Patrick and Grace Mugo, and Whitney Tucker of Elgin, daughter of Kenneth and Rosalyn Tucker, were chosen from a pool of 1,600 finalists nationally.

"It is always gratifying when talented students work hard and make the most of their abilities," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.

"Brian and Whitney are exceptional young scholars with bright futures ahead of them. My heartfelt congratulations go out to these young people and their families."

Mugo plans to attend Yale University in the fall. Tucker will attend Vanderbilt University.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding African-American high school students. All Achievement Scholarship winners are selected from the group of finalists based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments --- without consideration of financial circumstances or college choice.

In the Spring, the National Achievement® Program notifies about 800 finalists that they have been selected to receive an Achievement Scholarship award.

Located in Hartsville, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics is a public, two-year early college experience for academically talented and motivated juniors and seniors.
