GSSM Rising Seniors Immersed in Scientific Research
June 27, 2008
What do biomedical engineering, nanotechnology and pharmacology have to do with how teenagers spend their summer?
From June 8 through July 18, the rising senior class at GSSM along with seven other high school students from across the state are participating in a hands-on research program designed to teach academically motivated teens the importance of critical thinking and problem solving in a real-world setting.
Known as the Summer Program for Research Interns, SPRI is a proven curriculum enhancement designed to help meet both the short- and long-term needs of the state, while providing a unique educational opportunity for high-achieving students. More than 1,100 high schoolers have participated in SPRI since its inception in 1990.
During the summer of 2008, 68 rising seniors are gaining experience through SPRI at universities and R&D labs throughout the Palmetto State, including the Medical University of South Carolina, Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, Furman University, Francis Marion University, ArborGen and the Savannah River Site.
SPRI 2008 wouldn’t be possible without the following supporters: GE Energy; State Farm Insurance; Carolina First Bank; SCANA; ScanSource; Advance SC; Duke Energy; The Graham Foundation; D.L.
