GSSM Receives $1,700 Grant from Verizon Foundation

June 16, 2008

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) recently received a $1,700 grant from the Verizon Foundation to fund an upgrade for the School's foreign language lab.

This critical technology improvement will provide a much-needed solution while preparing for the school’s upcoming expansion in 2010 and the introduction of a brand new state-of-the-art digital media lab. Verizon’s investment will help to purchase software, subscription licenses and peripheral equipment for existing computers. New software will then permit interactive testing for the national Spanish and French exams, as well as open the door for the ultimate transition from tape to digital format. In addition, the new technology will allow students to practice pronunciation, speaking and listening.

“Verizon’s goal is to improve literacy and strengthen educational achievement for children and adults — preparing them for personal growth and success in the 21st Century,” said Stan Bugner, Verizon vice president-public affairs, policy and communications in South Carolina. “We focus on preparing children to be successful; enabling teachers, parents and caregivers to help children learn; and educating adults so they are prepared to achieve their goals and contribute to their communities. This is why the Verizon Foundation supports leading-edge, innovative and technology-based approaches to literacy and education.”
