Twenty GSSM Students Recognized as Furman Scholars

Twenty rising seniors at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) have been nominated as scholars at Furman University in Greenville.
The nominated students include: Ben Brittain of Myrtle Beach; Shari Carter of Cheraw; Maggie Dunn of Myrtle Beach; Travis Garriott of Walhalla; Sharon Guffy of Camden; Cuchulain Kelly of Rock Hill; Sarah Lancaster of York; Clarence Mabry of Aiken; Rebecca Miles of Cheraw; Marshall Mills of Beech Island; Brian Mugo of Columbia; Christine Noonan of Beaufort; Nicholas Pomata of Wadmalaw Island; Cari Ryan of Bluffton; Mary Caroline Saleeby of Society Hill; Tim Salizzoni of North Augusta; Anna Merryman of Myrtle Beach; James Vaughn of Hilton Head Island; Michael Waites of Wagener; and Campbell Yore of Greenville.
The Furman Scholars program seeks to honor high school juniors who exhibit strong academic potential for a liberal arts college. Guidance counselors nominate students during January and February of their junior year to participate in the program. Those students selected who enroll in Furman are guaranteed a $5,000 renewable scholarship.
Nominees must be juniors who meet all of the following qualifications: unweighted grade point average of 3.75 or higher, or weighted grade point average of 4.0 or higher; rank in the top five percent of the class; possess one of the following test scores: a PSAT score of 135 or higher (critical reading and math), a SAT score of 1350 or higher (critical reading and math), or an ACT composite score of 30 or higher; and have a genuine interest in obtaining an education in the liberal arts and sciences.
