GSSM Students Excel on National Spanish Exam

A group of students from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) recently attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2008 National Spanish Examination.

The National Spanish Exam is an online, standardized assessment tool given voluntarily by more than 3,000 teachers throughout the United States to measure proficiency and achievement of students who are studying Spanish as a second language.

Students scoring above the 50th percentile are recognized as follows: students scoring at or above the 95th percentile receive a gold medal placement certificate; students scoring from the 85th through the 94th  percentiles receive a silver medal placement certificate; students scoring from the 75th through the 84th percentiles receive a bronze medal placement certificate; and students scoring from the 50th  through the 74th percentiles receive a honorable mention certificate.

Students from GSSM earned a total of three gold placements: Marielle Abalo of Due West, Sharon Guffy of Camden and Sarah Lancaster of York; three silver placements: Ben Guyette of Due West, Raques McGill of Dillon and Timothy Salizzoni of North Augusta; and seven bronze placements: Shari Carter of Cheraw, Will McGee of Okatie, Danielle Mumford of Hartsville, Molly Tansey of Pawleys Island, Whitney Tucker of Elgin, Michael Waites of Wagener and Bella Wang of Florence. Sixteen additional GSSM students earned honorable mentions.

“Attaining any placement or honorable mention is very prestigious,”  said Kevin Cessna, National Director of the exam. “The exams are the largest of their kind in the United States, with well over 106,000 students participating in 2008.”  

Students from GSSM have a long history of high achievement on these exams and are taught by Senora Gladys A. Ingram.
