Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Named Only Public Elite High School in South Carolina

May 22, 2008

For the third consecutive year, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is the only school in the state to be named one of the Top 20 “public elite” high schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine.

In its May 26 issue, Newsweek ranks America’s best public high schools, with a record of 1,300. GSSM was excluded from the list due to the fact that so many of its students score well above average on the SAT and ACT; however, GSSM was included in the smaller list of the nation’s Top 20 “public elite” high schools.

“We are delighted that Newsweek magazine continues to recognize our place among the most prestigious secondary schools in the nation,” said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. “As our School prepares to more than double in size and add innovative new programs and curriculum, our ranks should only continue to rise.”

GSSM was noted on the fact that it is a “residential program for 11th and 12th graders that draws students from across the state.” GSSM’s current student body represents 33 of South Carolina’s 46 counties and the School has alumni from every county in the state.

Beginning in Fall 2010, GSSM will grow from 128 students annually to 300.
