GSSM Groundbreaking Marks First Step Toward New Growth
May 2, 2008
On Friday, April 25, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) broke ground on 70,000 square feet of much-needed academic and activity space at its Hartsville campus.
More than 200 students, faculty, staff, alumni, legislators, supporters and friends of the School took part in the event, which launched a year-long celebration of GSSM’s 20th anniversary.
“This was a genuine milestone event,” said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. “It was great to have so many friends of excellence in science education gathered here to mark the beginning of the next era at GSSM, because it gave us the chance to say ‘thank you.’ We contemplate growth with dramatic vistas of new programs, from the strong foundation of past success.”
The new facility will allow the school to more than double its current enrollment of 128 students. The faculty will increase as well, growing from 14 to 30 instructors. The activity center will extend the north arm of the existing building and will include a gymnasium, an engineering projects center, a kitchen for use with extracurricular activities, a dance studio, exercise rooms and equipment, and lounges. The academic center will extend the south arm and include an Economics and Finance Institute, a World Languages and Culture Lab, a Digital Media Center for Music and Art and an array of advanced classrooms and laboratories. The expansion will open in fall 2010.
