GSSM Vice President for Academic Affairs Appointed Adjunct Professor at University of South Carolina

April 29, 2008

Dr. Hemant Pendharkar, vice president for academic affairs at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM), recently was appointed adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia.

This position aims to increase communications and partnerships between GSSM and USC’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. GSSM officials expect to improve research opportunities and increase participation by GSSM students in USC seminars and similar events.

“I applaud this initiative on USC’s part as one of several avenues we are pursuing to create ever closer ties to our research university partners,” said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. “I salute Dr. Pendharkar for this independent recognition of the talent he brings to South Carolina.”

Pendharkar joined the GSSM administration as vice president for academic affairs in July 2007. He has published research articles in mathematics, theoretical physics and computer science; is an editor of research journals in mathematics; is a member of the Science and Engineering Advisory Team of the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiative; is an invited member of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges - Northeastern Region (CCSCNE); and has had research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and NASA.
