GSSM Students Take Top Honors at the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science Annual Meeting
April 2, 2008
Hundreds of budding young scientists gathered on the campus of Clemson University on Thursday, March 20, to participate in the 81st annual meeting of the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS.)
Nearly 200 students from across the state submitted written research reports and made oral presentations that were judged by a group of experts at the SCJAS annual meeting. The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics' (GSSM) senior class comprised nearly one-third of the students in attendance, with a total of 61 presenters.
This year GSSM accepted 69 awards, including 14 first-place, 19 second-place, 14 third-place, seven fourth-place, eight fifth-place, and seven sixth-place awards.
"I am very proud of how well our seniors performed, and I congratulate those students whose written and oral presentations earned them awards," said Randy LaCross, Director of Outreach and Research at GSSM. "Our GSSM research advisers are to be commended for their excellent work in preparing our seniors for SCJAS and their commitment to our research program."
The students' reports and presentations were derived from a six-week mentored research internship that all rising GSSM seniors are required to complete in order to be eligible to graduate.
