GSSM Says Goodbye to Longtime Trustee Nelle Taylor

November 27, 2007

Nelle Harmon Taylor, distinguished educator, died Friday, November 23, 2007, at the age of 77 in the Saluda Nursing Center.

Taylor graduated from Winthrop College with a B.A. in English and later earned a M.Ed. in Education Administration from the University of South Carolina. Her career as an educator and public education advocate took distinct phases. She taught English at Saluda High School for 13 years. She served as the school's first guidance counselor for 13 years. She moved to the district office as Saluda's first director of instruction for nine years and finished her career as Saluda District One School's first female district superintendent for seven years. Her years of service to Saluda were interrupted only by the year she was president of the 24,000 member South Carolina Education Association. Taylor had served on the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) Board of Trustees since 1989.

"As in all of the many responsibilities she undertook during her life, Mrs. Taylor was diligent, active, supportive, creative, helpful, and when necessary, demanding in her role on the Board of Trustees of the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. "She was instrumental in setting the early direction for the School, and her vision helped make it the outstanding, nationally-recognized institution of learning that it is today. She will be greatly missed both as a colleague and as a friend."
