Three rising seniors from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) recently completed the journey of a lifetime. The students─ Griffin Gray Hartmann of Seneca, Mason Youngblood of Hartsville and Nicole Beraho of Irmo─ spent their summer working as interns at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg as part of GSSM's Research Exchange Scholars Program.

For the fifth year in a row, the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) has been named one of the Top 20 "public elite" high schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine. The Hartsville-based school is the only Palmetto State school to earn this distinction.

Sixty seniors from across the state graduated from the GSSM May 29, earning in excess of $10.2 million in scholarship offerings. One hundred percent of the graduates will attend college with 72 percent electing to remain in the Palmetto State in the fall. Notable out-of-state schools attended by GSSM graduates of 2010 include Yale, Brown, Drexel, Vanderbilt, Emory, Wellesley and Georgetown.

Mark Godwin, GSSM physics instructor, has been elected to a three-year-term on the board of directors for the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology. He was elected at the organization’s annual professional conference in March. He previously served on the board from 2000-2007.

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics is celebrating 20 years of unmatched educational excellence. Since 1988, when the school was founded by the late Governor Carroll Campbell Jr. and former chairman of Sonoco Products Company Charlie Coker, the two-year residential high school has graduated 1,138 alumni from all 46 South Carolina counties. Fifty-two percent of those graduates remain in the Palmetto State for college and careers.
