GSSM Awarded Federal Funds for New Readiness Initiative

GSSM has been awarded $275,000 in federally appropriated funds to expand its outreach program through the launch of an innovative Readiness Initiative designed to prepare middle schoolers for entrance into GSSM and for careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Known as the "From Middle School to College" program, the project is a six-year initiative being developed by GSSM's Outreach Department to identify, nurture and support academically talented, low-income middle school students by targeting intensive individual math, science and writing skill development over the course of the program cycle. Alum Appointed to GSSM Board of Trustees

Dwight Floyd - Class of 1990

L. Dwight Floyd, Jr. '90 has been appointed to the school's board of trustees.

Floyd, a graduate of GSSM's charter class, is a litigation partner with Parker, Poe, Adams and Bernstein, LLP in Columbia, S.C. where he specializes in commercial litigation, with an emphasis on science and technology issues.

"We are particularly pleased with the Governor's appointment of Mr. Floyd," said Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president.

"Not only is he practicing law in areas critical for economic development, he is the first alumnus of the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics to serve on our Board.  He brings unique insight into our school to this role."

Board members are appointed by the Governor. They meet four times annually and serve as the policy-making entity for the school.
