SC GEAR UP

The SC GEAR UP partnership expands GSSM's outreach programs to more South Carolina middle and high schools than ever before.

The Outreach Center at the Governor's School continues its partnership with the SC Commission on Higher Education's (CHE) SC GEAR UP project by providing professional development experiences for science teachers as well as inquiry-based science activities for students in 18 selected high schools across the state.

What is SC GEAR UP? Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is designed to provide opportunities for low-income youth to enhance their academic skills and to acquire information, financial assistance and psychosocial support. Its mission is to accelerate academic achievement so that more low-income students will graduate from high school and succeed in college.

GSSM will host the College Access Summer Institute for Teachers (CASIT), a week-long, professional development workshop for seventh grade math, science and ELA teachers from SC GEAR UP partner schools, the week of July 18, 2011. To learn more or register, click here.

The SC GEAR UP program is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the state of South Carolina and the South Carolina business community.
