PAC Bylaws
ARTICLE I – Name
The organization shall be known as the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics Parent Advisory Council (PAC).
ARTICLE II – Purpose
The purpose of the PAC shall be to provide an exchange of information with the governing Board of Trustees and the President of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics on matters of parental concern including, but not limited to: academics, fund-raising, special events and student life.
ARTICLE III – Membership
Members of the PAC will be parents or legal guardians of current students.
ARTICLE IV – Term of Office
Each member of the PAC shall serve for the period of time that the respective child or ward is attending the South Carolina Governor's School of Science and Mathematics.
ARTICLE V – Officers
The PAC shall have as principal officers a Chair and a Vice-Chair. Other officers may be appointed as the need arises. The Chair shall represent the PAC with the Board and the President.
A. Principal Officers of the PAC, approved by the governing Board of the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, shall serve a term of one year. Officers shall be selected from a slate nominated by the PAC membership.
B. The chairs of the Standing Committees, appointed by the Chair of the PAC, shall server a term of one year.
C. The recording Secretary of the PAC shall be the President or his designee who also shall provide logistical assistance and other advice for meetings and the business of the PAC.
D. The creation of other offices of the PAC shall be at the discretion of the membership or the Executive Committee.
E. Terms of office shall begin with the academic school year and continue until the beginning of the next academic school year.
ARTICLE VI – Committees
The PAC shall have the following Standing Committees, plus additional committees created at the discretion of the PAC:
A. Executive Committee – Composed of the PAC Chair, Vice-Chair and the Chairs of the Standing Committees. The President of GSSM or his designee shall serve as an ex-officio member and will coordinate the information exchange between the governing Board, school staff and the Committees. This individual also will call meetings and provide overall leadership.
B. Admissions and Recruitment – Exchange information and cooperate with the governing Board, the President, the Director of Admissions and other staff in the recruitment and admissions process.
C. Academic Support to Students – Exchange information with the governing Board, the President, the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and other staff on matters of academic standards and policies.
D. External Affairs – Exchange information with the governing Board, [and] the President, and the Executive Director of the GSSM Foundation in areas of fund-raising, external support, legislative contacts and special events.
E. Student Development – Exchange information with the governing Board, the President, the Vice President for Student Development, and other staff in all areas of student services supportive of the living and studying environment of the campus.
F. Student Activities – Cooperate with the governing Board, the President, the Director of Student Services and other staff to enhance and help coordinate [all] student social functions.
G. Athletic Booster Committee – Work with the Athletic Director to enhance the caliber of the athletic program by providing fan support, travel, snacks, meals, as well as being a means of financial support.
H. Nominating Committee – An ad-hoc committee appointed by the PAC Chair to develop a slate of officers for submission to be voted on by the PAC membership. The Committee will be made up of one member from each Congressional District.
ARTICLE VII - Meetings
An annual meeting of the PAC will be held on Parents Day [in conjunction with the parent and student orientation meeting on campus] each year in the fall. Other meetings may be called at the discretion of the Executive Committee.
ARTICLE VIII – Amendments
The Bylaws of the Parents Advisory Council may be amended by a majority vote of the PAC membership at its annual meeting.
